Using 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Duplicators for 2.5” Drives

You may have noticed that most hard drive duplicators and other similar devices on the market are built specifically to work with 3.5” SATA hard disk drives. This is mainly due to the fact that 3.5” SATA hard disk drives are widely used, but the fact of the matter is 2.5” hard drives are becoming increasingly popular as laptops and Solid State Drives (SSDs) continue to sell like hotcakes.

The best way to get a 2.5” hard drive to fit into a device made for a 3.5” drive is to make the 2.5 inch hard drive look and work just like a 3.5” one.  How does one do that? With an adapter, of course, and Aleratec offers two different types of adapters to fulfill your requirements:

–   Aleratec’s 2.5” HDD Adapters for 3.5” Drive Bays (Part #: 350106): The most basic and functional adapter offered, this solution features a very simple mount and eject system which allows you to insert and remove 2.5” hard drives with ease. It also provides mounting holes that mimic a standard 3.5” hard drive. The SATA port in the back is exactly where it would be located on a 3.5” hard drive.

–   Aleratec’s Premium 3.5” SATA Hard Disk Drive Adapter and External Enclosure (Part #: 350113): A more fully featured adapter, this solution can function both as an adapter and as a USB 2.0 external enclosure. It protects your 2.5” hard disk drive with a hard drive enclosure yet still allows quick and easy access. It also features an activity light which indicates when your drive is being accessed. As an external hard drive enclosure, you can access your drive by simply plugging it into a computer’s available USB 2.0 port using an optional USB 2.0 cable (sold separately).

Both of the aforementioned Aleratec adapters use special NSS (Non-Scratch SATA) connectors which prevent damage to your hard drives’ SATA connector leads. This unique design brings each contact down from above the connector leads, rather than dragging the contact across the leads as typical connectors do. This system actually allows the NSS (Non-Scratch SATA) connectors to be rated for more than 50,000 swap cycles!

Plus, both of the hard drive adapters mentioned above work with most of Aleratec’s tower hard drive duplicator and sanitizer models, specifically the 1:11 HDD Copy Cruiser, the 1:5 HDD Cruiser, and the 1:1 HDD Cruiser. If you have any of these units, all you need to start duplicating or sanitizing your 2.5” SATA hard disk drives is a few 2.5” hard disk drive adapters and you’re in business.
