Adapter to Turn Your 2.5 inch SATA Hard Disk Drive to a 3.5 inch HDD

In my last blog, I looked at some of the reasons that notebook drives may be used in desktops.

For an organization – or even small businesses or individuals – that is seeking to duplicate hard drive, one practical approach to making the duplicates is to simplify and speed up the process using duplicators that are specially designed to perform this function.  By using HDD duplicators, the organization will be able to free up computers that may otherwise occasionally be used for making copies.  With the availability of duplicators that can copy as many as 11 drives at once, an organization can quickly produce the desired number of drives for its system upgrades, new system installations, or drive updates.

Most drive duplicators, including many from Aleratec, are designed to duplicate 3.5” SATA drives.  For example, the Aleratec 1:11 HDD Copy Cruiser (Part # 350109) can duplicate as many as eleven hard drives at once, Aleratec’s 1:5 HDD Cruiser (Part # 350104) will duplicate as many as 5 hard drives at once, and the Aleratec 1:1 HDD Cruiser (Part # 350103) will duplicate one disc at a time – but all three models are designed for 3.5” (desktop) SATA drives.

When you start the duplicators, the drives will be recognized and the basic menu will be presented on the duplicator.   From there, the duplicator treats each drive as a hard disk drive (and it makes no distinction between notebook or desktop – to the duplicator, it’s just a drive).  You will be able to select the function you desire, using the menu on the duplicator, and in addition to just making a direct copy, you will also be given options to format the target drives, to compare drives, and to perform other maintenance and diagnostic functions.

Additionally, the Aleratec duplicators will also enable you to sanitize your drives.  When you retire a drive, it’s good practice to sanitize the drive – rather than just reformatting or doing a simple ‘wipe’ of the data on the disc.  In many industries and government organizations, this type of drive sanitation is required for proper disposal of the drives.

Having the ability to duplicate, sanitize or format notebook AND desktop hard drives should be important to most organizations.  Aleratec’s 2.5 inch HDD adapters can be an important addition to an organization’s hard disk drive management toolkit, since it transforms the 2.5” SATA drive’s form factor to that of a 3.5” drive.  By using Aleratec’s 2.5 inch HDD adapters, many devices built only for 3.5” SATA drives can be used on 2.5” SATA drives as well.
